KPPV 106.7 FM was honored at the Arizona Associated Press Broadcasters Association Annual Awards Competition in Phoenix. The awards are presented by the Associated Press’s Phoenix Bureau to the station and staff which best exemplify the cooperative spirit of the news gathering organization.
KPPV’s Ken Byers, Bill Monroe & Sanford Cohen won the 1st Place Paul McGonigle Memorial Award for Best Newscast/Division 2 for their 9/11/02 newscast. The judge’s notable comments were “Very comprehensive newscast with lots of sound. Good roundup of local and state news.”
KPPV’s Ken Byers & Sanford Cohen won 1st place in the Continuing Coverage/Division 2 for their comprehensive coverage of the Rodeo-Chedeski Fire. The interesting point of this award is that it was won over all other local stations, many of whom were geographically much closer to the actual incident. The judges said, “Excellent continuing coverage. Production tops! Solid scripting. Did not miss a beat. Big market quality!”
According to KPPV President and General Manager Sanford Cohen, the awards confirm what he has felt about his staff for quite some time. “I am extremely proud of what Ken and Bill have accomplished since teaming up in September of 2001. These awards are a confirmation of the quality that has been a goal of our station since its inception.”
KPPV, according to Cohen, is a throwback to the traditional full service radio stations which put serving the local community as the highest priority.
